WorldSkills 2024

Medal of Excellence for Elias Kleespies – Congratulations!

Every year, the best craftsmen from all over the world challenge each other at the WorldSkills competition. The contestant who ultimately prevails is the best - not only at demonstrating their talent, but also at keeping their nerves under pressure - because the conditions are extraordinary: Tightly packed spectators, loud cheers, rhythmic clapping, and an armada of cameras. This is not the usual backdrop for the work Elias Kleespies performs on his furniture. At this year's WorldSkills in Lyon, he represented the German carpentry trade - assisted by Klingspor and other contributors. In the end, he was even distinguished by the Chancellor.

Impressive ranking for the runner-up

Kleespies competed for Team Germany in the furniture carpentry category at this year’s World Championships for Trade Professionals. With amazing success: The German vice-champion in carpentry won a fantastic fifth place at the World Championships in Lyon, trailing the winner Yun-Rong Tsai from Taiwan by a mere 20 points.

Awarded the Medal of Excellence

His complex wine rack with its flap, drawer, and open sides with a rung design impressed the jury enough to award it 730 out of 800 possible points. At the award ceremony held in Lyon’s football stadium, Elias Kleespies even received a medal for his top-notch performance – a Medal of Excellence. This distinction is only bestowed on participants who scored more than 700 points.

High-precision work under heavy time constraints

The piece of furniture had to be finished after 22 work hours stretched over four days – it came down to a few seconds: This is how Elias Kleespies experienced the last day of the competition – the random orbital sander is sent flying at the final whistle!

Fireworks, flags, music, and goosebumps: The WorldSkills award ceremony had the feel of the Olympics!

Prepared and outfitted to perfection

Over the course of more than three years, Klingspor supported the exceptional young carpenter during his preparations for the WorIdSkills: The tools Elias Kleespies kept in his trolley for his training included abrasive screens and self-fastening discs made by Klingspor. Klingspor’s abrasive tools were also constantly by his side in Lyon. He relied on the following products:

Abrasive screens AN 400

The open lattice structure of the AN 400 abrasive screen affords the user effective and full-surface dust extraction. This feature allows the user to sand with next no dust formation when dust extraction is used. Dust-free sanding extends service life significantly while improving health and safety at the same time. There is no dependency on existing suction hole systems Offering universal suitability, this abrasive screen lets professional users and do-it-yourselfers alike breeze through their projects.

Abrasive discs PS 22 K

The abrasive PS 22 K is a hook and loop abrasive disc that delivers a superior level of dependability and durability. Fixed in place with a synthetic resin, a high-quality velour fabric is bonded to the paper backing (E-paper). Even if subjected to high tool pressure, the velour fabric will stay securely connected to the backing pad. Safe, confident and reliable work is possible even at high process temperatures. Professionals who do not want to compromise on their work therefore rely on the sanding discs from the Klingspor range.
