10 years of Klingspor diamond tools

A look back at an extraordinary project

Wolf-Dieter Pflaumbaum is the one who has managed the project from the very beginning. He had already gained extensive experience in the field of diamond tools in the past and was able to contribute this valuable expertise to Klingspor. "I used to have my own diamond disc production and therefore knew exactly what makes the market tick. When we found it increasingly difficult to control the quality of purchased diamond blades, we decided to take production into our own hands," explains Pflaumbaum.

Thanks to his experience and the support of Haiger, production was quickly up and running. “The first discs were of excellent quality right away, it was a perfect team effort,” says Pflaumbaum happily. He is particularly proud of the quick and successful oSa certification at the first attempt. The collaboration with colleagues in Ukraine also went very well from the outset. "In particular, Daria Kozhan was an incredible support and a real “pearl” for us," recalls Pflaumbaum.

Focus on business development

For Ibraim Lapa, Head of Business Development, the start of diamond cutting disc production was a particular challenge. "At the beginning, we had little experience in the diamond segment. Much of the knowledge came from Mr Pflaumbaum," explains Lapa. In his department, market analysis was particularly in demand. From competitor analyses to product training and customer appointments – business development had a decisive influence on the correct positioning of the new portfolio.

"At the beginning, the focus was more on small diamond cutting discs for angle grinders. But gradually we expanded our portfolio and concentrated more on large cutting discs," says Lapa. In particular, large cutting discs for machines such as petrol cut-off saws, table saws and floor saws are now an important part of the range.

Lapa emphasises that overcoming the uncertainty in handling the new products and training the sales organisation accordingly was particularly challenging. "We had to transfer our knowledge from other areas to the diamond segment and adapt it," explains Lapa. Despite these initial difficulties, the sales development over the last 10 years is an impressive success.

Daria Kozhan: A retrospective from Ukraine

Hired originally for the quality management department, Daria Kozhan was transferred to diamond blade production right at the start of the project and has played a central role in production and organisation in Ukraine from the very beginning. "When I joined Klingspor, the hall was still empty. The entire infrastructure had yet to be built," she says. Kozhan was responsible for communication between the departments in Haiger and in Ukraine. Over time, she took on more and more tasks in the area of production planning and in controlling the availability of raw materials.

"The first few months were particularly challenging because the infrastructure had to be set up quickly and reliably. This included not only machines, but also special requirements such as a special floor covering in production and adaptation to local conditions," says Kozhan. Teamwork in Ukraine has also been of great importance in recent years due to the difficult political situation. "In the first year of the war, there were many air raids, but thanks to the cohesion between all departments on site and the great support from Haiger, we were able to react flexibly and maintain production," reports Kozhan.

Despite the difficult circumstances, production has continued to develop. "We have even switched to UV printing and successfully developed formulations," says Kozhan. Even though they keep facing challenges – such as the delays in the procurement of raw materials – the production team has shown remarkable flexibility. Deliveries from Lviv are always on time and meet the highest quality standards. Kozhan emphasises the importance of mutual support: "We motivate each other, stay positive and don't want to let anyone down."

An interim conclusion: teamwork is the key to success

The history of diamond cutting blade production at Klingspor is an impressive testament to what can be achieved when expertise, commitment and teamwork come together. It has been a long journey from the first step of the decision to take production in-house to the successful establishment and expansion in a highly competitive market – but one that has more than paid off.

The 2025 anniversary is not only a reason to celebrate, but also a symbol of the successful collaboration between the teams in Germany and Ukraine, of innovations in the field of diamond cutting disc production and of the courage to take on new challenges and overcome them together.

Klingspor can be proud of this achievement and of the many dedicated employees who have made this success story possible.

The right and important step

Olaf ter Jung, CEO of Klingspor AG, draws a positive conclusion after 10 years of diamond cutting disc production in Ukraine and sees the decision in favour of in-house production of diamond cutting discs and in favour of the production location in Ukraine as an important and correct step: "The diamond cutting discs manufactured in Lviv are characterised by exceptional quality and durability. Cutting-edge production technologies, strict quality controls and innovative developments guarantee consistently high performance, durability and precision. At this point, I would like to express my particular thanks to our colleagues in Ukraine for their tireless commitment."
